May 2021 Be A BETTER Year
In a crisis, we are reminded that we are not alone. That we can give selflessly and take without embarrassment because we are a part of a larger community. We are participants, not observers.
Don’t doubt, don’t dwell, don’t break! We are descendants of survivors, we too will persevere. The Covid-19 crisis will pass. Don’t let the feelings of interdependence, belonging and responsibility for one another pass with it. We are in it together and affect each other in a crisis and without.
The climate change crisis is temporarily overshadowed by the virus, but it will outlast Covid-19. It threatens – and will continue to threaten – our survival. (Don’t listen to climate change deniers, these are the same people who deny the existence of Covid-19, sabotage our efforts to contain the spread of the virus by refusing to wear face masks and don’t want to be vaccinated. Ignorance is contagious, make sure not to get infected!)
The New Year is just beginning and all of us will celebrate our birthdays. Accepting gifts is nice. Giving them is an expression of power. What gifts will you GIVE on your birthday in 2021?
One idea: how about planting a tree for your birthday? When you live, breathe, drink and eat, you take away from the Earth. When you plant a tree, you give a little back…. (Wouldn’t it be great if everyone planted just one tree, on their birthday, every year?)
Another idea: due to the virus, it’s unlikely that any of us will have a birthday party in 2021. The party money will remain with us. How about sharing a few bucks? Pay for someone else’s groceries at the cash register, if you can.
Compassion, responsibility and generosity are expressions of power. You are NOT powerless, exercise your power: DOING good has more value than hoping and praying for it!
