The Impotent Paris Agreement
Holistic Church and Rev. Enrich condemn the war in Ukraine, the Russian invasion of an independent country, and Russian crimes against humanity in Ukraine. Ours is a Church, not a political organization. Rev. Enrich is not a politician, either. With that said, we are astounded by the turn of events in Ukraine and the world’s reaction to them.
While the brave President of Ukraine approached NATO, individual allies and the United Nations asking for help, the world remains unmoved and intimidated by the prospect of WW3.
We live in the era of climate change that threatens global survival. Anything that endangers the Earth’s ecological security is a threat to us all.
Rev. Enrich doesn’t understand the disconnect between politics and ecological security. Politics aside, wasn’t the Russian attack at Chernobyl the perfect opportunity to step in and stop the war? In 1986 Chernobyl was the site of the largest nuclear disaster on Earth. Tinkering with Chernobyl is not only an attack on Ukraine, but a potential nuclear threat to the world.
In my mind, had multiple countries acted together – to stop Russian troops from entering Chernobyl – in the name of global survival and delaying climate change, it wouldn’t be – and couldn’t be perceived as – a political act. An action with a justified environmental agenda, would have likely stopped the war in Ukraine as well….
It is shocking that in the era of solar power, electric cars, and growing awareness of climate change, a war doesn’t raise any global warming red flags. Especially, when the aggressor signed the Paris Agreement.
Run a red light and hello: even though there was no accident, no injury, and no material loss, you’ll get a big ticket. Like it or not, traffic laws are being enforced.
On the other hand, burn the Earth, risk a nuclear disaster, massively contribute to global warming, and accelerate climate change: no problem. The international community, including all signers of the Paris Agreement, won’t touch you.
In other words, don’t run a red light! The local law enforcement will get you and prosecute you. However, if you’d like to cause a nuclear disaster, commit crimes against humanity, or accelerate climate change: you’ll be just fine, nobody’s watching; nobody’s prosecuting. Knock yourself out!
Aerial bombardments, tanks, artillery, gas-powered armored vehicles, landmines and explosions, the threat of chemical and nuclear weapons being deployed by Russia: no problem. As long YOU don’t eat beef or drive a gas-guzzler.
As a Humanists and Holists, we DON’T get it.
